ACRA and SID Say Financial Literacy Is a Director's Baseline. Are Your Books Ready?
On August 28, ACRA and SID launched the Company Director Fundamentals (CDF) programme at the SID Directors Conference 2026. The conference theme was "New Game, New Rules: Do Boards Need A Reset?"
The programme comprises 10 bite-sized modules - each 15 to 20 minutes - covering legal and fiduciary duties, handling conflicts of interest, corporate tax compliance, and financial literacy. Six free foundational modules, four paid for those who want to go deeper. Registration opens in October.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Indranee Rajah launched the programme. Her message was direct: "When the world becomes more uncertain, getting the fundamentals right becomes even more important."
She also described trust as "a competitive advantage" in an uncertain world and said climate reporting should be treated as a strategic tool, not merely an obligation. She called on directors to take ownership of their continued development, saying national institutions alone cannot sustain Singapore's reputation as a trusted business hub.
SID chief executive Emily Poon said the programme would equip directors across companies of different ownership structures, sizes, and stages of growth "with the knowledge and confidence to fulfil their responsibilities." The certificate of completion from ACRA and SID reinforces that this isn't a nice-to-have. It's becoming part of the governance baseline.
Here's what stands out for SMEs. Understanding company finances is a standalone module in the CDF programme. Not bundled into a broader topic. Not optional. Financial literacy is being treated as a baseline requirement - something every director needs before they can effectively govern.
That message flows straight down to SME boards.
A director who can't read the cash flow position can't assess operational risk. A board that can't follow the GST filings can't sign off with confidence. A director who doesn't understand the difference between revenue and cash collected is governing blind.
The CDF programme raises the bar on what directors are expected to know. But knowing how to read financials only matters if the financials themselves are clean, current, and accurate.
If your books are a mess of spreadsheets and receipts, no amount of director training will fix governance. Directors can only govern what they can see.
OCi System ensures the financials are ready for review - bookkeeping, invoicing, GST filing, and cash flow tracking in one platform. Audit-ready. Real-time. The kind of numbers a board can actually read, question, and govern with.
Governance starts with the numbers. Make sure yours are ready.
