NUS Just Made AI Literacy Compulsory. Here's What That Signals for SMEs.

NUS announced a partnership with OpenAI on August 11. From August 31, every student, faculty member, and staff member gets access to ChatGPT Edu. Incoming freshmen must complete an AI module within their first two weeks of school.

The university's provost, Professor Aaron Thean, called it a "significant but necessary" investment. He didn't share the cost. He didn't need to. The word "necessary" did the work. This is Singapore's top university treating AI fluency not as an advantage but as a baseline.

A minimum competency. Something every graduate should have, the same way they should be able to write a coherent email. Here's why this matters for SMEs. In three to four years, the graduates entering the job market will have been using AI tools since their first week of university.

They'll have spent their entire degree learning how to ask better questions, automate routine analysis, and work alongside AI assistants. When they walk into an SME still running on manual spreadsheets, paper invoices, and end-of-month data entry marathons, two things will happen.

First, they'll notice. Second, they'll leave. The businesses that adopt AI-native tools now - starting with accounting software that automates reconciliation, pulls GST directly from transactions, and gives real-time cash flow visibility - will be the ones that attract and retain this workforce.

The ones that don't will spend more time explaining why things are done manually than actually doing them. NUS isn't waiting for AI to mature. They're building it into the foundation. SMEs have a narrower window, but the principle is the same.

The question isn't whether AI is ready for your business. It's whether your business is ready for the people who already use it.
