Singapore's SMEs Are Winning at Google, Losing at AI
Here's something that snuck up on Singapore's small businesses. A growing share of customers - particularly younger ones - have stopped searching the old way.
Instead of scrolling through Google results, they're asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews to find a florist, plumber, tuition center, renovation contractor, or food caterer. The AI reads through websites, decides which ones are worth quoting, and stitches together its own answer. The business that gets mentioned wins. The ones that don't simply don't exist in that result.
Ranking on Google and being quoted by an AI answer engine are two different achievements.
The second runs on rules almost nobody has been told. SMEs spent years learning SEO. Keywords. Backlinks. Meta tags. Page speed. That playbook worked. It still works, for now. But the ground is shifting under it.
Here's why this matters beyond marketing: the same principle applies to how your business runs internally.
AI tools - the ones that help with reconciliation, reporting, forecasting - work the same way as the consumer-facing engines. They need clean, structured, accessible data to produce useful output. If your books are a mess of spreadsheets, manual entries, and unreconciled transactions, no AI tool can make sense of them.
Disorganised data is invisible to the systems that could save you hours every week.
The businesses that will adapt fastest to the AI search shift are the same ones whose internal data is already in order. They're not starting from scratch.
Their information is structured, categorised, and ready to be read - by a search engine, a customer, or an accounting tool.
The SEO playbook took years to learn. This shift is moving faster. The businesses with clean data - on their websites and in their systems - have a head start.
