The Singapore MICE Forum 2026 ran from July 29-31.

Over 1,600 industry professionals showed up. The headline topic wasn't if AI would disrupt the industry. It was how. A panel called "The Future of Work: Human Optional?" drew the crowd. The discussion pushed back on the lazy "AI replaces jobs" narrative.

One company shared that they downsized from 10 to 3 using AI systems and automation. Revenue increased. Stress decreased. That's the story people skip. AI didn't just cut costs. It changed what the remaining team could do.

But here's the part that matters for SMEs. Adoption is uneven. Larger companies with dedicated tech budgets are pulling ahead. Smaller organisations are still watching from the sidelines. We see the exact same pattern in SME accounting.

The firms that moved to automated accounting software six months ago are already compounding the benefit. Reconciliation that used to take three days now takes three hours. GST filing pulls directly from transaction data.

Cash flow dashboards update in real time. The ones still on spreadsheets? They're not standing still. They're falling behind. Every quarter of manual data entry widens the gap.

The forum's message was clear. Singapore has "no choice" on AI adoption - but it should be "meaningful and deliberate." Not cutting for the sake of cutting. Building capacity for higher-value work.

For SMEs, that starts with the books. Accounting is the foundation. Get that system automated and accurate, and the efficiency gains compound across inventory, reporting, compliance, forecasting.

The companies that adopted early aren't smarter. They just started earlier. The gap is still closeable. But it won't stay that way.
